Intermittent Wiper Operation and Washer Pump Replacement

Intermittent Wiper Operation

Some 1985 FWD De Villes and Fleetwoods with windshield wiper motor build dates between 200- 84 and 115-85 (see Figure 1) may exhibit one or more of the following conditions:

- Wiper may stop in hi or lo speed but if switch is turned to another speed, will start to operate.

- Wiper may stop in intermittent mode but if switch is turned to another speed, will start to operate.

- Wiper may park from any mode without switch being turned off.

To repair these conditions, a new end cap (P/N 22038791) has been released for service. Follow the procedure below to replace an end cap.

1. Disassemble end cap by bending tabs outward and remove end cap from armature shaft (see Figure 2). Do not remove armature.

2. Spray electrical contact cleaner on clean cloth and wipe commutator clean. Apply grease supplied with the end cap to end of armature shaft.
3. Install new end cap and bend tabs to original positions.

For warranty purposes, use labor Operation N3575 at .2 hours. (Labor Time Guide Policy Code M applies).
Windshield Washer Pump Replacement

Some 1985-86 De Villes and Fleetwoods may require a windshield washer pump motor replacement due to an inoperative washer pump.

Washer pumps require a constant flow of washer fluid to provide cooling for the pump. Without fluid flow the washer pump will overheat and become inoperative. Therefore, two steps should be performed when replacing a washer pump motor to ensure fluid flow.


1. Check system for restrictions. Specifically inspect the check valve (see Figure 1) for debris. Also check for a plugged reservoir screen, kinked or restricted hoses, and plugged nozzles.

2. Before installing new pump, place a few drops of washer fluid (concentrated or dilute) in the pump inlet tube. Install the pump and connect the inlet and outlet hoses. Operate the system two or three times to prime the system and check operation. The drops in the inlet tube provide lubrication to protect the pump while it is priming.
