Refrigerant Filter: Description and Operation

Liquid Line Filter With Orifice:

Liquid Line Filter Installation:

An aftermarket filter (61) is available for air conditioning refrigeration systems that have been contaminated. Filter (61) eliminates the need for Refrigerant-11 flushing. Filter (61) should be installed after repeated expansion tube plugging or when replacing a seized compressor assembly. The filter (61) installation is intended to replace the former practice of system flushing and/oil replacement of the accumulator assembly.

Filter (61) contains a screen and a filter pad. The screen catches larger particles and retains the filter pad. The filter pad catches the smaller particles and filters the refrigerant oil.

Filter (61) must be installed in the low-pressure air conditioning evaporator tube assembly (65) between the condenser assembly and evaporator.

Two types of filter are available - one without an orifice (expansion tube) and one with an orifice (expansion tube). The filter with an orifice (expansion tube) is required for this air conditioning refrigeration system because the filter (61) must be installed in the low-pressure side beyond the location of the original expansion tube. The original expansion tube must be removed because the filter orifice serves the same purpose. If the original expansion tube is not removed, air conditioning performance will be greatly reduced.
