SUBJECT: TILT STEERING COLUMN NOISE OR SQUEAKS
MODELS AFFECTED: ALL WITH TILT OR TILT AND TELESCOPE STEERING COLUMNS
Some vehicles equipped with tilt or tilt and telescope steering columns may experience a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel while in a tilted position. This can be caused by insufficient grease in the tilting mechanism.
TO CHECK FOR THIS CONDITION:
1. Start engine.
Figure 1 - Steering Wheel:
2. Position steering wheel in the full up position. See Figure 1.
3. Touching only the rim, turn the steering wheel back and forth to the extreme left and right positions.
4. Repeat this procedure with the column tilt mechanism positioned at the straight on and full down positions.
TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION:
1. Position the tilt mechanism in the full up position.
Figure 2 - Lubricating The Universal Joint:
2. Spray lubriplate lubricant grease, P/N 1052349, or equivalent into the opening alongside the tilt lever, aiming at the universal joint. See Figure 2. Turn steering wheel one full turn while applying grease.
3. Hold tilt release lever in the released position and move steering wheel from full up to full down position 4 to 8 times.
4. If squeak persists, repeat step 2.
