Date June '87
SUBJECT: SQUEAKS AND/OR RATTLES WITH HARDTOP INSTALLED
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 ALLANTE
Figure 1 - Measure Height of Pin From A Constant Surface (such as the weatherstrip retainer):
Some 1987 Allantes built before VIN 001100 may experience squeaks and/or rattles while driving with the hardtop installed. The noise level of this condition will increase with mileage accumulation. This condition may be caused by relative motion between the hardtop and body.
To repair this condition, install reinforcement plates, P/N 1645171 (two required) using the following procedure:
1. Remove hardtop and place upside down on a protected surface.
2. Measure and note height of side locating pins from the weatherstrip retainer to the cone base (refer to Figure 1).
3. Loosen jam nut and remove locating pin from base of B-pillar.
Figure 2 - Place Reinforcement Plate On Surface as Shown:
4. Position the reinforcement plate on the hardtop (refer to Figure 2).
5. Apply Loctite (R) 271 or equivalent to entire threaded portion of locating pin.
6. Install pin into base of B-pillar and adjust to the measured height noted in step 2.
7. Tighten jam nut to 6-8 N-m.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 on opposite side.
9. Install hardtop.
NOTE: Some further adjustment of the B-pillar latch hook length may be required to eliminate the remaining squeaks and/or rattles. The latching effort should be firm, but not so much as to be uncomfortable to unlatch with one thumb. Loctite (R) the hook length adjuster threads when making this adjustment.
