MODELS AFFECTED:
1985-1993 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS (FWD 1986-1993 ELDORADOS, SEVILLES, AND ALLANTES WITH 4.5L, 4.9L ENGINE
A revised oil pan gasket has been incorporated into 1993 production after VIN breakpoint EUN 594476 and is also released for servicing all 1985-1993 transverse V8 engines (except 4.6L). This revised gasket, P/N 3538862, consists of a plastic carrier with a pre-formed silicone insert as the sealing medium. Retaining tabs are incorporated to hold the gasket in position during installation.
When installing this new gasket in vehicles not originally equipped, the Service Information Manual procedure should be followed with two exceptions:
1. The use of RTV sealant at the front cover and main bearing cap joints is not required.
2. Thread locking compound such as P/N 12345382 or 12345493 (Loctite 242 or 243) or equivalent should be applied to the oil pan bolts. Always be sure bolt threads are clean when using thread locking material.
Note that 1993 vehicles after VIN breakpoint EUN 594476 are already equipped with a thread locking oil pan bolt, P/N 3537345, and are reusable without additional application of thread locking compound. Oil pan bolts with pre-applied locking compound may be reused up to five times before additional locking material is required or bolts should then be replaced.
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
For warranty purposes use Labor Operation J1000 using the labor allowance appropriate for the model year of the vehicle being serviced. Labor allowances remain unchanged from those for the original cork gasket.
