Headlight - Aiming Procedure

SUBJECT: ALLANTE HEADLIGHT AIMING PROCEDURE

Figure 1 - Tools Required for Composite Headlight Aiming:

The procedure for aiming the headlights on the 1987 Allante is identical to the method followed on other composite headlight equipped Cadillacs.

The same tools used for aiming are required (see Figure 1):

J-25300-1 Unit A - Driver Side Aimer
J-25300-2 Unit B - Passenger Side Aimer
J-25300-203 - Composite Headlight Adapters

There is a difference in the fashion in which the headlight aimer adjustment specification is marked on the headlight lens itself. The composite headlights used on Eldorado, Seville, De Ville and Cimarron have these adjustment specification numbers embossed next to the mounting pad upon which the legs of adapter J-25300-203 rest. There are three such mounting pads on each headlight; one in the center of the upper edge of the lens and one at each end of the lower edge.

Figure 2 - Composite Headlight:

On the Allante, the only numbers that appear on the lens are a 12H and 10V embossed next to the lower outboard mounting pad (see Figure 2). The adapter legs should be set to the following adjustment specification numbers. The lower outboard pad should be set at 12H, the upper center pad should be set at 10V, and the lower inboard pad should be set at 0. These settings are applicable to both the right hand and left hand headlight.

Use the following procedure to adjust headlight aim:

1. Fuel level must be 1/2 tank or less.
2. Place vehicle on a level pad.
3. Stop all other work on the vehicle.
4. Close doors.
5. Attach J-25300-1, J-25300-2 and J-25300-203 to both headlights.
6. Rock vehicle sideways.
7. Check or set headlight aim to:

- Vertical aim 50.8 mm (2.0") UP to 63.5 mm (2.5") DOWN.
- Horizontal aim 101.6 mm (4") RIGHT to 101.6 mm (4") LEFT.

See Figure 2 for vertical and horizontal adjuster locations.
