SUBJECT: HARDTOP REAR BOW VINYL TRIM COMES LOOSE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 ALLANTE

Some 1987 Allantes may exhibit vinyl trim that comes loose on the hardtop rear bow (see Figure 1).. This condition may be caused by incorrect installation of the vinyl to the rear bow.

To repair this condition, use the following procedure:

1. Remove the hardtop from the vehicle and lay it upside down on a protected surface.

2. Identify the areas where the vinyl is not glued along the rear bow (see Figure 1).

FIGURE 2:

3. Using a blunt instrument, carefully peel back the vinyl to expose the unglued surface (see Figure 2).

4. Hold the exposed surface down with the blunt instrument and carefully apply a bead of Locktite (R) 401 Instant Adhesive or equivalent, to the unglued vinyl (see Figure 3).

5. Using a wooden wedge with the dimensions shown in Figure 4, hold the vinyl down in the manner shown for a minimum of 15 minutes (see Figure 5).

NOTE: Do not apply too much adhesive as the excess will bond the vinyl to the wood and may cause the vinyl to tear.
6. Reinstall hardtop.
