SUBJECT: SEAT BELTS ARE TOO SHORT OR CATCH IN THE DOOR
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 ALLANTES
Some early built 1987 Allantes may exhibit one of the following conditions:
^ The seat belt may not be held firmly against the lower retractor escutcheon when fully retracted, allowing the metal buckle to be trapped between the door and the sill plate when the door is closed.
^ Owners may comment on restricted movement caused by insufficient shoulder belt webbing length when the seat is in the full forward position.
FIGURE 1 - SEAT BELT GUIDE EXTENSION:
Both of these items were corrected simultaneously during mid-model year 1987. An extension was added to the lower retractor assembly to locate the buckle of the belt when it is not in use, and shoulder belt webbing was lengthened to allow additional movement for passengers. Determine which set of belts are in any vehicle by checking whether there is an extension showing through the carpet escutcheon (refer to Figure 1).
To repair these conditions replace the seat belt assembly, the rocker cover escutcheon, and lower retractor cover on both sides of the vehicle with part numbers listed below. Refer to Section 10-9 in the Allante Service Information Manual for the seat belt replacement procedure.
