SUBJECT: DOOR WINDOWS BINDING OR SLOW

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987-1988 ALLANTES

Some 1987-1988 Allantes may experience a condition of slow operating or binding door windows. This condition may be more noticeable in colder outside temperatures. To repair this condition, use the following service procedure:

1. Remove lower door trim panel. (Refer to Section 10-5 of the Allante Service Information Manual).

2. Mark window location to sash around the three attaching bolts.

FIGURE 1 - REGULATOR:

3. Position the lower regulator attaching flange so the attaching bolts are approximately centered in the slotted holes, refer to Figure 1, item 6.
NOTE: After performing each step run window and verify if condition is still present; if not, proceed to next step.

4. Loosen the two 10mm bolts on the bottom of the guide block and apply pressure outward on the sash, moving it as far outboard as possible, and tighten the bolts. (Refer to Figure 1, item 8.)

FIGURE 2 - TWISTED GUIDE:

5. Inspect the upstop adjustment. Adjust the upstop so threads show at the top and bottom where it is threaded through the regulator block, refer to Figure 1, item 2. If the upstop requires adjustment, the glass must be adjusted up or down as needed to ensure good sealing to the roof weatherstrip. Adjust the glass by loosening the three attaching bolts, moving the glass and tightening the bolts. Mark the new location of the glass on the sash.

FIGURE 3 - GUIDE CONTOUR:

6. Remove the door glass and inspect the aluminum guide that is bonded to the front of the glass. Sight down the length of the glass from top to bottom and verify that the contour of the guide matches the contour of the glass. If the guide is "twisted" (refer to Figure 2), cover the guide with masking tape to protect the guide appearance; and reform the guide with hammer and dolly or pliers to match the contour of the glass (refer to Figure 3).

FIGURE 4 - GRINDING FRONT EDGE OF GUIDE:

7. Inspect the leading edge of the guide for wear. The guide is designed for inboard and outboard support of the glass only and should not contact the leading edge of the run channel felt strip. To eliminate the possibility of the guide "bottoming out" in the run channel, file or grind 4mm off the entire front edge of the guide. Use a strip of masking tape as a guide, refer to Figure 4. Smooth all sharp edges and round off comers to prevent the guide from "digging in" to the run channel felt strip.
8. Remove the run channel felt strip and inspect for wear, cuts, bunching up, or separating at the center seam. If any of problems are noted, replace the run channel felt strip.

9. Reinstall the door window relocating it in its last marked position to the sash. If no improvement in condition is noted, replace the regulator and verify all previous adjustments.
