Timing Cover: Service and Repair

(Figure 1) Front Cover:




REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery ground cable
2. Drain cooling system
3. Serpentine belt
4. Tensioner
5. Generator and lay aside
^ Loosen generator bracket
6. Power steering pump and move aside
7. Idler if equipped
8. Raise vehicle and suitably support
9. Inner splash shield
10. Flywheel cover at transaxle
11. Damper with J 24420
12. Starter
13. Lower oil pan
14. Lower vehicle
15. Radiator hose at water pump
16. Heater coolant hose at cooling system fill pipe
17. Bypass and overflow hoses
18. Water pump pulley
19. Spark plug wire shield at water pump
20. Canister purge hose
21. Upper Timing Cover bolts
22. Timing Cover

INSPECT
^ Sealing surface on the Timing Cover and cylinder block
^ Sealing surfaces with degreaser

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket making to not damage sealing surfaces
2. Apply 1052080 sealer or equivalent to sealing surface of Timing Cover
3. Place Timing Cover on the engine, install upper cover bolts
4. Raise car and suitably support
5. Oil pan
Tighten
^ M6X1.0 Bolts to 8-12 Nm (6-9 ft. lb.)
^ M8X1.25 Bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lb.)
6. Lower cover bolts
Tighten
^ M8X1.25 Bolts to 18-36 Nm (13-26 ft. lb.)
^ M10X1.5 Bolts to 27-48 Nm (27-48 ft. lb.)
7. Serpentine belt idler pulley if equipped
8. Damper as previously outlined
Tighten
^ Bolt to 90-115 Nm (66-85 ft. lb.)
9. Flywheel cover on transaxle
Tighten
^ Bolts to 12 Nm (107 in. lb.)
10. Starter
Tighten
^ Bolts to 36-50 Nm (26-37 ft. lb.)
11. Inner splash shield
12. Lower vehicle
13. Radiator hose at water pump
14. Heater hose at cooling system fill pipe
15. Bypass and overflow hoses
16. Canister purge hose
17. Power steering pump
Tighten
^ Bolts to 36-50 Nm (26-37 ft. lb.)
18. Generator bracket
^ Bracket Bolts to 40-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lb.)
19. Generator
Tighten
^ Generator bolts to 27-34 Nm (20-25 ft. lb.)
20. Serpentine belt tensioner & belt
21. Fill cooling system.
22. Battery ground cable

INSPECT
^ Coolant level
^ For leaks
