SUBJECT: ENGINE MISS, BACKFIRE, HARD START, HESITATION OR STALL
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 CIMARRON
Some 1987 Cimarrons may experience an engine miss, stall, hesitation, backfire or crank but no start condition.
FIGURE 1 - DISTRIBUTORLESS IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY:
This condition may be caused by improper resistance or an open in the secondary windings of the distributorless ignition coil(s) (Figure 1). If the above condition is experienced on a 1987 Cimarron, the resistance of the individual ignition coils should be checked as follows:
1. Measure coil resistance with the Kent-Moore High Impedance Digital Volt Ohm Meter, J-34029-A, or equivalent.
2. Set the meter on the 20k scale.
3. Remove both spark plug wires from an individual coil.
4. Measure the resistance across the coil towers (Figure 1). The resistance of the coil may have to be measured hot and cold as some coils show an acceptable reading cold.
5. Replace an individual coil if:
- It measures lower than 5000 ohms (5.0 on the meter),
- It measures greater than 7000 ohms (7.0 on the meter),
- It is open circuited ("OL" on the meter).
6. Repeat for the remaining coils.
Individual coils (P/N 10497771, Group 2.170) may be serviced separately.
For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation T6237 at 0.5 hour.
