5 Speed Manual Transaxle

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Support engine using suitable engine holding fixture. Position holding fixture so that one end is supported by the cowl tray and the other end is resting on the radiator support, see accompanying figure. Attach holding fixture hook to engine lifting bracket and raise engine just enough to relieve weight from engine mounts.

WARNING: The engine holding fixture must be located in center of cowl and fixture attachments properly tightened before supporting engine. This support is not designed to support the entire weight of the engine and transaxle assembly.

3. Remove transaxle mount attaching bolts.

CAUTION: When removing transaxle mount, alignment bolt M6.0 x 1 x 65 must be installed in right front engine mount to ensure proper powertrain alignment.

4. On 1985-88 models, remove clutch slave cylinder from support assembly. On 1982-84 models, disconnect clutch cable at clutch fork, then remove transaxle mount bracket retaining bolts and nuts.

5. Disconnect shift cables and remove retaining clips at transaxle.

6. Disconnect ground cables at transaxle mounting stud, then remove air management valve attaching bolts to provide clearance for upper right hand transaxle to engine attaching bolt.

7. Raise and support front of vehicle, then drain transaxle fluid.

8. Remove left hand front wheel and tire assembly, then remove front inner splash shield.

9. Remove transaxle strut and strut bracket.

10. Remove clutch cover attaching bolts, then disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.

11. Disconnect stabilizer bar at left hand suspension support and control arm.

12. Detach ball joint from steering knuckle.

13. Remove left hand front suspension support attaching bolts, then remove support and control arm as an assembly.

14. Install boot protectors, then disengage drive axle shafts at transaxle using tool Nos. J28468, J29794 and a suitable screwdriver. Remove left hand drive axle shaft from transaxle.

15. Secure transaxle to a suitable transaxle jack, then remove transaxle to engine attaching bolts.

16. Remove transaxle by sliding toward drivers side of vehicle (away from engine), then carefully lower jack while guiding right hand drive axle shaft out of transaxle.

17. Reverse procedure to install. When installing transaxle, carefully guide right hand drive axle shaft into transaxle bore as transaxle is being raised. The right hand drive axle shaft cannot be installed once the transaxle has been connected to the engine.
