SUBJECT: HARD OR NO SHIFT CAUSED BY LOOSE SHIFT LEVER NUT HM-282
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987-1988 CIMARRONS
Vehicle conditions of hard or no shift may be caused by a loose shift lever nut which allows the shift lever to cock and bind while shifting.
FIGURE 1 - EXTERNAL TRANSAXLE MOUNTED LINKAGE:
When servicing any HM-282 manual transmission shift lever component, inspect the square flats of the shift lever (135, Figure 1) for rounding. If worn, replace shift lever. Apply Loctite(R) 242 removable threadlocker or equivalent to the shaft threads before torquing the shift lever nut to 70-95 N-m (52-70 ft.lbs.).
IMPORTANT: Before torquing the nut, first remove the shift cable from the shift lever. Then use a 3/8 inch drive ratchet to hold the shift lever by inserting it in the shift cable slot while setting torque. Following this procedure will ensure that damage will not occur to the shift forks or synchronizer assemblies during torquing.
Use Labor Operation K1220 Lever, Shifter Shaft-Replace at .9 hour.
