SUBJECT: CLOCK GAINS OR LOSES TIME
MODELS AFFECTED: 1986-1987 ELDORADO AND SEVILLE
Some 1986-1987 Eldorados and Sevilles may experience a condition where the clock gains or loses time; running either too fast or too slow. This condition may be due to the BCM, which contains the clock circuitry.
Before replacing the BCM for this condition, be sure to follow the procedure outlined below.
1. Determine what the vehicle's clock accuracy is being judged against. It is best to call "TIME" on the telephone rather than rely on the accuracy of another house/shop clock, wristwatch, radio station or "bank clock." The engineering specification for the clock allows for an accuracy of + or - 2 minutes per month.
2. If the clock's accuracy is not within specification, check that the grounds for the BCM are clean and tight. The ground studs on the block near the starter are of particular importance (G103, shown in Component Location, Section 8A of the Service Information Manual).
3. If the grounds are clean and tight, and the clock's accuracy is still not within specification, replace the BCM. The yellow return tag provided with the replacement BCM should be included when the BCM is returned for the core charge. The yellow tag must include: a detailed explanation of the condition, the degree to which the clock is inaccurate, and the time standard used (e.g., telephone time).
SETTING THE TIME
Use the following procedure to set the time on the clock. This is the same procedure outlined in the owner's manual.
^ Below the row of driver information center buttons, locate the small hole to the right of the words "date/time set."
^ Insert a pen or other pointed object into the hole.
^ Press the pen into the hole to move the time functions from right to left. When each function is ready to be set, it will flash. On the first push, the minutes will flash, on the second push, the hours will flash, a third push and the date will flash, a fourth push and the month will flash, a fifth push and the year will flash and, on the sixth push, you will exit the time set function.
^ Notice the arrow symbols on the left of the driver information center panel. A down arrow is above the "Time-Temp" button and an up arrow is above the "Range" button. Pressing "Time-Temp" reverses and pushing "Range" advances the numbers or months. Push these buttons in quickly to change the numbers one at a time, or hold the button in to rapidly change the numbers.
