Driver/Vehicle Information Display: Service and Repair
Fig. 1 Driver Information Center:
This system, Fig. 1, incorporates a warning lamp, located on the instrument cluster, that is illuminated when the ignition switch is in the On position. After a few seconds the lamp should go off, unless a message in The Driver Information System is present. The driver information center will display the following messages:
A/C Overheated--A/C Compressor Off--This message is displayed when excessive pressure in the refrigerant system is encountered. When this condition is encountered, the A/C compressor clutch will be de-energized and cool air will not be delivered to the vehicle interior. The message will continue to appear and the A/C compressor clutch will continue to be de-energized until the system pressure returns to normal range. If this message frequently appears, the A/C system should be serviced.
A/C Sensor Fault--This message will be displayed when the sensor controlling A/C compressor clutch cycling has failed. When this sensor has failed, the A/C compressor will not operate and the A/C system will emit warmer air. After servicing system and replacing sensor, the display message will be cancelled.
Battery Volts High--This message will appear when the charging system is overcharging the battery. After completing charging system diagnosis and repair, the message will be cancelled when battery voltage returns to 11.5 to 15.5 volts with engine operating. Battery voltage can be displayed on the Drive Information Center Display by depressing the Eng-Data button three times.
Battery Volts Low--If this message is displayed while driving the vehicle or after vehicle has been started, a problem in the charging system is present or battery has been drained. After diagnosing charging system or electrical system for cause of battery drain, the message will be cancelled when engine is operating and battery voltage is between 11.5 to 15.5 volts. Battery voltage can be displayed on the Drive Information Center Display by depressing the Eng-Data button three times.
Engine Hot--A/C Compressor Off--This message will appear when A/C system is on Auto or Defrost and engine coolant temperature is excessive. The A/C compressor clutch will be automatically de-energized when excessive engine coolant temperatures are encountered. When engine coolant temperature returns to normal, the A/C compressor clutch will be energized and the message on the display will be cancelled.
Front Or Rear Door Ajar--This message will appear when the transmission selector lever is moved out of the Park position and a door is not properly closed. The message can be cancelled by properly closing the indicated door.
Fuel Level Very Low--When low fuel level conditions are encountered this message will appear. To cancel message, add fuel.
Headlamps Or Parking Lamps On--This message will be displayed when the headlamp switch is On, vehicle is moving and the sensed level of outside light indicates that headlamps should not be illuminated. This message may be cancelled by placing the headlamp switch in the Off position.
Low A/C Refrigerant--A/C Compressor Off--This message will be displayed when the A/C system detects a refrigerant charge low enough to cause compressor damage. When this condition is encountered, the A/C compressor clutch is de-energized and the A/C system is switched from Auto to Econ. The system will remain in Econ until necessary repairs are made and system is recharged. After completing necessary repairs and recharging the system, A/C system operation will return to normal and the message on the display will be cancelled.
Low A/C Refrigerant--Service A/C Soon--This message will be displayed when the A/C system detects that refrigerant charge is low enough to cause a reduction in cooling capacity. This message will be displayed until system has been recharged.
Low Washer Fluid--This message will appear when windshield washer fluid level is low. To cancel message, refill windshield washer fluid reservoir.
Service Electrical System--This message will appear when a problem in the charging system is present. After repairing charging system, the message will be automatically cancelled.
Service Now Or Service Soon--This message will be displayed when a problem in one the engine monitored systems is present. After diagnosis and repair the message will be automatically cancelled. System Problem--Service Car Soon--This message will be displayed when one or more of the vehicle computers supplying information to the Driver Information Center become defective. After diagnosis and repair of the defective computer, the message will be automatically cancelled.
Theft System Problem/Car May Not Start--This message will appear when the vehicle security system senses an improper ignition key has been placed in the ignition switch. After removal of key from ignition switch, the Driver Information Center display will indicate ``Wait 3 Minutes'', ``Wait 2 Minutes'', Wait 1 Minute'' and then ``Start Car.'' When the ``Start Car'' message appears, insert ignition key and attempt to start vehicle. If message appears again, check ignition key for damage and replace as necessary. If key appears to be satisfactory, clean pellet contacts with a soft cloth and attempt to restart vehicle.
Trunk Open--This message will appear when the ignition switch is the Run position and the trunk is not properly closed. The message can be cancelled by properly closing the trunk.
