SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, UPPER BEARING SEAT, INNER RACE, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, BUZZER SWITCH & LOCK CYLINDER SET

Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove horn pad, disconnecting horn lead from cam tower and remove retainer, jam nut and steering wheel.
3. Remove shaft lock retainer, bumper, spacer and snap ring retainer using special tool No. J 23653-A to depress shaft lock.
4. Remove shaft lock and turn signal cancelling cam.
5. Remove upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat and inner race.
6. Turn signal to ``right turn'' position and remove screw and signal switch arm.
7. Remove screws and turn signal switch, harness protector, hazard knob and pull wire harness through gear shift lever bowl, column housing and lock housing cover.
8. Remove key from cylinder lock, then buzzer switch and clip.
9. Install key in cylinder lock and turn to Lock position.
10. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder set.

Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set and torque screw to 26 lb in
2. Turn key to the Run position and install buzzer switch and clip.
3. Connect turn signal switch wire harness through lock housing cover, column housing and gear shift lever bowl, installing wiring protector.
4. Install turn signal switch and torque screws to 26 lb in
5. Install signal switch arm and torque to 18 lb in
6. Install hazard knob, inner race, upper bearing seat, upper bearing spring and turn signal cancelling cam.
7. Install shaft lock and retainer using special tool No. J 23653-A to depress shaft lock.
8. Install steering wheel, jam nut and retainer.
9. Connect horn lead, then install horn pad and connect battery ground cable.

LOCK HOUSING COVER, COVER END CAP, PIVOT & SWITCH ASSEMBLY, DIMMER SWITCH ROD ACTUATOR & TILT SPRING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock cylinder set as previously described.
2. Remove cover screws, lock housing cover and tilt lever.
3. Remove cover housing end cap and dimmer switch rod actuator.
4. On models equipped with cruise control, disconnect cruise control connector and remove multifunction lever.
5. On all models, disconnect and pull pivot switch harness through column housing and gear shift lever bowl.
6. Remove pivot pin, pivot and switch assembly.
7. Remove spring retainer, spring and spring guide.

Assembly
1. Install spring guide and spring coated with lithium grease, then spring retainer.
2. Install pivot switch harness through gear shift lever bowl and column housing, pivot and switch assembly and pivot pin.
3. Install dimmer switch rod actuator, bottom edge of actuator should rest on bend in dimmer switch rod, then cover housing end cap.
4. On models equipped with cruise control, connect cruise control connector and install multifunction lever.
5. On all models, torque screws for the lock housing cover to 89 lb in Tightening the screw in the 12 o'clock position first, then the 8 o'clock position second and the 4 o'clock position last.
6. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock cylinder set as previously described.

COLUMN HOUSING, LOCK SHOES, ACTUATOR SECTOR ASSEMBLY, SWITCH ACTUATOR RACK, BEARINGS & LOCK BOLT ASSEMBLY

Disassembly

1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly as previously described.
2. Remove pivot pins using special tool No. J 21854-01 or equivalent, Fig. 63.
3. Install tilt lever and remove column housing assembly by pulling back on tilt lever and pulling housing down and away from column.
4. Remove driveshaft, switch actuator sector, switch actuator rack and rack preload spring.
5. Remove release lever pin, shoe release lever and release lever spring.
6. Remove dowel pin, lock shoes and lock shoe springs.
7. Remove bearings, hex head bolt, lock bolt spring and lock bolt.

Assembly
1. Install bearings to column housing, then driveshaft and switch actuator sector.
2. Install lock shoes, dowel pin and lock shoe springs.
3. Install release lever spring, shoe release lever and release lever pin.
4. Install rack preload spring and switch actuator rack to actuator sector.
5. Install lock bolt, lock bolt spring and hex head bolt.
6. Install column housing assembly to column. Position column housing assembly and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of actuator rod. Pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing assembly onto column housing support assembly. Release tilt lever to lock shoes.
7. Remove tilt lever and install pivot pins lubricated with lithium grease.
8. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly as previously described.

SHAFT ASSEMBLY, COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT, SHIFT TUBE ASSEMBLY, IGNITION SWITCH, DIMMER SWITCH & LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring, column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector assembly, switch actuator rack, bearings & lock bolt assembly assembly as previously described.
2. Remove steering column from vehicle.
3. Remove bearing clip, bearing retainer, lower bearing and lower bearing adapter.
4. Remove shaft assembly and check for accident damage.
5. Remove lower shaft, sphere from shaft assembly, and retainer clip from sphere.
6. Remove screws, housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod.
7. Remove hex nut and bolt, dimmer switch and mounting stud.
8. Remove ignition switch, and actuator rod assembly.
9. Remove shift tube retaining ring, thrust washer and gear shift lever spring.
10. Remove shift tube using special tool No. J 23072 or equivalent.
11. Remove lock plate, wave washer and gear shift lever bowl.

Assembly
1. Install gear shift lever spring to gear shift lever bowl and gear shift lever bowl to shift tube bracket.
2. Install wave washer lubricated with lithium grease and lock plate.
3. Install shift tube using special tool No. J 23073 or equivalent.
4. Install thrust washer and shift tube retaining ring.
5. Install dimmer switch rod to housing support.
6. Install housing support assembly and torque screws to 80 lb in
7. Install actuator rod assembly to track in housing support, retaining clip and sphere to shaft assembly.
8. Install lower shaft to shaft assembly. Block tooth on shaft lower end of shaft assembly at 12 o'clock position; notch at end of lower shaft at 4 o'clock position.
9. Install shaft assembly lubricated with lithium grease, to column.
10. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly, column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector assembly, switch actuator rack, bearings & lock bolt assembly as previously described.
11. Install lower bearing adapter and bearing. Lubricate inner bearing surface with lithium grease.
12. Install lower bearing retainer, lower bearing clip, dimmer switch, hex nut and bolt.
13. Install ignition switch and mounting stud.
14. Install column in vehicle and connect battery ground cable.
