SUBJECT: A/C FUSE
MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS 1989 ELDORADOS AND SEVILLES 1989 ALLANTES
Some 1989 DeVilles, Fleetwoods, Eldorados, Sevilles, and Allantes may experience a condition of a blown A/C fuse. This condition may be intermittent, causing the fuse to blow on repeated occasions. Fuse locations are listed below:
Model Position
Allante 10
Eldorado/Seville 2
DeVille/Fleetwood 7
This condition may be caused by the A/C compressor clutch diode legs becoming shorted to the harness. The diode was relocated about seven inches away from the compressor clutch connector with the introduction of the pull-to-seat connector for the 1989 model year. To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the compressor splash shield as described in the appropriate Service Information Manual.
3. Remove the conduit and heat shrink material protecting the diode.
4. Test diode with a digital voltmeter. Generally, a properly operating diode can be re-insulated and returned to the harness conduit. Inoperative diodes should be replaced using a 1 amp, 2000 volt common clamping diode, available at local electronic stores.
