SUBJECT: TRANSAXLE SLIPS WHEN COLD - THM 440-T4 AND THM F-7

MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 DE VILLES, ELDORADOS, SEVILLES, AND ALLANTES

Some 1989 DeVilles, Eldorados, Sevilles, and Allantes may experience an intermittent transaxle slip in forward and/or reverse when cold. This may be due to one or more undersized input shaft oil rings (624) that seal the input clutch and 3rd clutch feed holes. The slipping may occur less in reverse or manual lo ranges (due to boosted line pressure) than in the other drive ranges.

Service Action:

THM 440-T4: Disassemble the transaxle, remove the input shaft and housing assembly (626) and inspect the shaft oil seal rings in the grooves. Replace them if they do not occupy the full groove width, refer to Figure 1. Use parts listed under Service Parts Information.
IMPORTANT: INSPECT THE 3RD CLUTCH AND INPUT CLUTCH ASSEMBLIES FOR DAMAGE OR EXCESS WEAR. REPAIR AS NECESSARY.

THM F-7: Replace the transaxle with a SRTA unit.
