SUBJECT: REAR WHEEL OPENING MOLDING CENTER STUD PROTRUDES INTO THE TIRE ENVELOPE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 DE VILLES

Some 1989 DeVilles may experience a condition of the rear wheel opening molding center stud contacting the tire under certain loads and driving conditions, resulting in a mark on the tire. This condition may be caused by the nut being overtorqued. If the nut is overtorqued, the clip portion of the center stud may deform and allow the stud to protrude past the surface of the nut. To repair this condition, use the following procedure:

Figure 1 - Measure Stud:

1. Measure the length of center stud protruding beyond the surface of the nut. Refer to Figure 1.

2. If the center stud protrudes more than 8.6 mm remove the rear wheel opening molding.

Figure 2 - Inspect Molding:

3. Inspect the molding surface near the center retaining clip for any distortion or indentations. Refer to Figure 2.
4. Replace the molding if necessary.

Figure 3 - New Clip:

5. Replace the center retaining clip with the new clip, P/N 12397719. The new clip has a shorter stud and a plastic sleeve. Refer to Figure 3.
6. Reinstall the molding (specified torque is 6-9 N-m).
