Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair






REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Rocker arm covers.
4. Intake manifold.
5. LH exhaust manifold for LH cylinder head or RH exhaust manifold for the RH cylinder head depending on which cylinder head is being removed.
6. Engine lift bracket.
7. Dipstick tube (LH cylinder head).
8. Ten cylinder head bolts.
9. cylinder head.
10. Clean the head bolts and sealing surfaces of the cylinder:
^ Head.
^ Block.
^ Liners.

NOTE: Using compressed air, blow out head bolt holes to remove any accumulation of oil or coolant. Use care when cleaning upper row of holes so that foreign material does not remain inside engine.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New head gasket over dowels on cylinder block either side up.
2. Cylinder head.
3. Apply camshaft and lifter prelube, GM # 1052365 or equivalent, to all head bolts.
4. Cylinder head bolts finger tight. Tighten bolts in 5 steps as follows:
Step 1 - 40 Nm ± 3 Nm (30 ± 2 ft lbs), All bolts and studs.
Step 2 - 70 Nm ± 3 Nm (52 ± 2 ft lbs), All bolts and studs.
Step 3 - 110 Nm ± 3 Nm (81 ± 2 ft lbs), All bolts and studs.
Step 4 - 120 Nm ± 3 Nm (89 ± 2 ft lbs), Five inboard studs # 1, 3, 4, 7, & 8.
Step 5 - 130 Nm ± 3 Nm (96 ± 2 ft lbs), Three center inboard studs # 1, 3, & 4.

CAUTION: It is extremely important that the above procedure, sequence and torque values are maintained to ensure proper head gasket performance.

5. Dipstick tube (LH cylinder head).
6. Engine lift bracket.
7. Exhaust manifold(s).
8. Intake manifold.
9. Rocker arm covers.
10. Negative battery cable.
11. Engine coolant.
