Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair




















TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Tools Required
^ J-28467 Engine Support Fixture
^ J-34754 Drive Axle Boot Seal Protectors


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner, assembly and T.V. cable.
3. Cruise control servo and bracket assembly.
4. Wire connectors to distributor, oil pressure sender, and transaxle.
5. Engine oil cooler line bracket.
6. Shift linkage bracket from transaxle and manual shift lever from manual shaft. It is not necessary to remove cable from lever or bracket.
7. Fuel line bracket and neutral safety switch connector.
8. Vacuum modulator.
9. T.V. cable support bracket, engine oil cooler line bracket, four bell housing bolts in positions 2.3,4 and 5.
10. A.I.R. crossover pipe fitting and reposition pipe, radiator hose bracket, transaxle mount to bracket nuts.





11. Install engine support fixture and note position of fixture hooks.
12. Raise vehicle, ensure suitable support.
13. Both front tire and wheel assemblies.
14. Right and left stabilizer link bolts, ball joint cotter pins and nuts.
15. Separate both ball joints from steering knuckles.
16. A/C splash shield, # 1 cradle insulator mount cover.
17. A.I.R. pipe end hose connections and rear mounting clip.
18. Vacuum hoses and wire loom from clips front of cradle.
19. Engine mount and dampener to cradle attachments, transaxle mount to cradle attachments, wire loom clip to trans mount bracket.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Raise transaxle two inches from original position using two left support hooks.
22. Raise vehicle.








23. Right front and left rear cradle to cradle bolts, left stabilizer mount bolts.





24. # 1 cradle mount insulator bolt and left cradle member (separate right front corner first).
25. A.I.R. management valve and bracket assembly from transaxle and reposition bracket to transaxle stud bolts.
26. Lower vehicle.
27. Lower transaxle to original position.
28. Transaxle mounting bracket.
29. Raise vehicle.





30. Right rear transaxle mount to transaxle bracket and engine to transaxle brace bolts into transaxle, VSS connector.
31. Flywheel covers and torque converter bolts.
32. Position transaxle jack under transaxle to support.





33. Bell housing bolts in position # 1 and # 6.

IMPORTANT
^ To remove/install bolt at position # 6, it is necessary to use a 3' socket wrench extension to access the bolt through the right wheelhouse opening.






34. Cooler lines from transaxle.
35. Install driveaxle boot seal protectors J-34754.
36. Separate driveaxles from transaxle and reposition.
37. Transaxle assembly.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Lower bell housing bolts.

Tighten
^ Bell housing bolts/studs to 75 N.m (55 ft. lbs).

IMPORTANT
^ Studs positions # 2,3
^ Bolts positions # 1,4,5,6 (4 or 6 is longer than 1 or 5)

3. Converter to flexplate bolts.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 63 N.m (46 ft. lbs.).

4. Flexplate splash shield.
5. Cooler lines to case.

Tighten
^ Fitting nuts to 21 N.m (15 ft. lbs.).

6. To reassemble, reverse transaxle removal steps 1 through 36 listed above.

Tighten
^ #1 insulator mount bolt to 100 N.m (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Cradle to cradle mounting bolts, all positions to 100 N.m (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Upper transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 100 N.m (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Side transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 70 N.m (50 ft. lbs.).
^ Rear (left) transaxle mount nuts to 45 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Engine mount to cradle attachments 45 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Right rear mount bracket to transaxle bolts to 70 N.m (50 ft. lbs.).
^ Right rear mount bracket nuts to 45 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Stabilizer mount bolts to 50 N.m (38 ft. lbs.).
^ Stabilizer link bolts to 17 N.m (13 ft. lbs.).
^ Ball joint nuts to 110 N.m (81 ft. lbs.).
^ Shift cable bracket to transaxle bolts 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
^ Wheel lug nuts to 140 N.m (100 ft. lbs.).

ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift linkage.
