E040
Code E40:
Power Steering Switch Circuit:
DESCRIPTION:
This diagnostic test monitors the power steering pressure switch. When a load is placed on the power steering such as a full lock position the switch opens. Code E40 sets when vehicle speed is above 45 MPH and the switch is open. The power steering switch is located under the engine on the rack-in pinion assembly under the ABS hydraulic unit.
TEST CONDITIONS:
1. Engine running.
2. Vehicle speed 45 MPH or greater.
FAILURE CONDITIONS:
Power steering switch open with vehicle speed 45 MPH or greater.
ACTION TAKEN:
1. PCM/ECM turns on "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" telltale.
NOTE ON INTERMITTENTS:
Select switch test E.7.8 and manipulate affected wiring. If the fault is induced the display will change. The wiring should be repaired for an intermittent open. Disconnect and reconnect the switch connector and PCM/ECM connector and ensure they are latched. The code will be current only if the vehicle speed is 45 mph or greater. If a normally open power steering switch (an incorrect part) is installed, a code E40 will set and may appear to be intermittent.
