Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Relieve fuel pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Drain engine coolant and oil.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Mark hood installation alignment mars, then remove.
7. Remove cooling fan.
8. Remove accessory drive belt.
9. Remove upper radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
10. Disconnect and position aside the following electrical connectors:
a. Oil pressure switch.
b. distributor.
c. EGR solenoid.
d. Engine temperature switch.
e. Idle speed control (ISC).
f. Throttle position sensor (TPS).
g. Coolant temperature sensor and fuel injectors at rail connector.
h. MAT sensor.
i. Oxygen sensor.
j. Alternator.
k. Ground wire at alternator bracket.
11. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle lever.
12. Disconnect cruise control diaphragm with bracket and position aside.
13. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
14. Disconnect oil and transmission cooler lines at radiator.
15. Remove radiator.
16. Disconnect oil and transmission cooler lines from oil filter adapter, then remove lines.
17. Remove oil cooler line bracket at transmission, then air cleaner bracket.
18. Remove oil filter housing adapter.
19. Remove strut tower crosscar brace.
20. Remove right front heater hose.
21. Remove power steering line bracket from right cylinder head.
22. Disconnect power steering tensioner assembly and position aside.
23. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect accumulator and condenser lines.
24. Disconnect fuel rail fuel lines, then remove fuel line bracket to transmission and position aside.
25. Disconnect vacuum modulator line and power brake vacuum line and position aside.
26. Raise and support vehicle.
27. Remove starter heat shield.
28. Disconnect starter electrical connectors and engine block ground wires.
29. Disconnect exhaust pipe to converter at RH manifold.
30. Remove starter, then two flexplate covers.
31. Remove three flexplate attaching bolts, then remove.
32. Remove A/C compressor lower dust shield.
33. Remove right front wheel and tire assembly.
34. Remove wheelwell plastic shield.
35. Remove right rear transaxle to engine mount.
36. Remove lower engine mount attaching nut.
37. Remove front engine mount attaching nuts, then right rear transaxle mount attaching bolts.
38. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector and heater bypass bracket front righthand side of vehicle.
39. Lower vehicle, then remove five upper engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
40. Install suitable engine lifting equipment, ensuring A/C accumulator line clearance.
41. Support transmission using suitable jack stand, then remove engine to transmission attaching bolts, then remove engine assembly.
42. Reverse procedure to install.
