Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Mark position of hood hinges, disconnect necessary electrical connectors, then remove hood hinge bolts and the hood.
4. Remove engine cooling fan and serpentine drive belt.
5. Disconnect upper radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors from the following components:
a. Oil pressure switch.
b. Coolant temperature sensor.
c. Distributor.
d. EGR solenoid.
e. Engine temperature switch.
f. ISC motor.
g. Throttle position switch.
h. Injectors.
i. MAT sensor.
j. Oxygen sensor.
k. Throttle body base warmer.
l. Alternator and ground wiring at alternator bracket.
m. Electric EFE grid.
7. Release engine harness from retainers and secure aside.
8. Disconnect accelerator, cruise control and transmission cables from throttle body.
9. Remove cruise control diaphragm brackets and secure assembly aside.
10. Disconnect oil and transmission cooler lines from radiator.
11. Disconnect remaining hoses and remove radiator.
12. Disconnect oil cooler lines at filter adapter and remove lines.
13. Remove oil cooler line bracket at transaxle and the air cleaner bracket.
14. Remove oil filter adapter housing.
15. Disconnect AIR tubes from diverter valve, if equipped.
16. Remove front right and rear body cross braces.
17. Disconnect and remove right front heater hose and coolant reservoir.
18. Remove AIR filter box and bracket, if equipped.
19. Disconnect power steering line bracket from right cylinder head, remove power steering pump and tensioner retaining bolts and secure assembly aside.
20. Discharge A/C system, disconnect A/C lines at accumulator and condenser, and plug lines and open fittings.
21. Connect a suitable tool to fuel line Schrader valve and slowly bleed fuel system pressure into a container.
22. Disconnect fuel lines at throttle body and fuel line bracket from transaxle, then position fuel lines aside.
23. Remove EGR lines and brackets.
24. Disconnect vacuum modulator line, then the power brake vacuum line.
25. Raise and support vehicle, remove starter shield, and disconnect starter wiring and block ground straps.
26. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and the starter motor.
27. Remove both flexplate dust shields, then the three bolts securing torque converter to flexplate.
28. Remove A/C compressor dust shield.
29. Remove right front tire and wheel, then the outer wheel house plastic shield.
30. Remove right rear engine to transaxle mounting bolt and the lower engine damper nut.

31. Remove front (left) engine mount nuts and right rear engine/transaxle mount bolts, Fig. 1.
32. Remove alternator and oxygen sensor wiring and the heater bypass bracket from right side of vehicle.
33. Remove right engine brace, then lower vehicle.
34. Remove five top engine to transaxle mounting bolts.
35. Install lift equipment and support transaxle with a jack.
36. Raise engine, separate engine from transaxle, then remove engine from vehicle.
37. Reverse procedure to install.
