Interior Trim - a Warp or Sag in Quarter Trim Panel

SUBJECT: QUARTER TRIM PANEL SAG OR WARP ABOVE QUARTER WINDOW

MODELS AFFECTED: 1990-1991 ELDORADOS

Some 1990-1991 Eldorados may experience a warp or sag condition in the interior quarter trim panel above the quarter window.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Remove left and right quarter trim panels from car. Refer to Section 10-7 of the appropriate Service Information Manual.

2. Remove staples from along the top of the substrate using flat-bladed tool.

3. Carefully pull back vinyl along top to expose substrate.

4. Scrape surface with the edge of a razor blade to remove excess foam.

5. Scuff exposed substrate with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper to remove remaining excess foam and mold release from area.

6. Using a heat gun, apply heat to the area until part returns to a normal, flat condition. Be careful to hold back vinyl away from heat so it will not melt.

7. Obtain two quarter panel repair kits from GMSPO.

Each kit contains one metal reinforcement bracket and one tube of Loctite 410 adhesive.

8. Scuff one side of metal bracket with 80 to 120 grit sandpaper.

9. Clean metal bracket with a degreasing solvent.

10. Slightly arch metal bracket with scuffed side on inside of arch.

11. Apply 1/8" bead of Loctite 410 adhesive along center of scuffed side of metal bracket.

12. Attach metal bracket to exposed top section of quarter trim panel, 1/2" from inboard side of quarter trim panel as shown in Figure 1.


13. Hold metal bracket in place until set (approximately five minutes).

14. Apply a bead of Loctite 410 adhesive around entire perimeter of metal support.

15. To secure vinyl, apply bead of Loctite 410 along edge of substrate and pull vinyl tight until secure.

16. Let quarter trim panels stand for one hour.

17. Reinstall quarter panels in car. Refer to Section 10-7 of the appropriate Service Information Manual.

For warranty purposes use Labor Operation T6570 at .8 hour for right side quarter panel and Labor Operation T6571 at .8 hour for left side quarter panel.
