Sunroof / Moonroof: Description and Operation

Opening/Reverse

When the Astro Roof Switch is in the REVERSE position, voltage is applied to the Motor and the Astro Roof Relay coil at terminal 6 causing the relay to energize. With the relay energized the motor will run since the Astro Roof Relay contacts close to provide a ground path for the motor through the Astro Roof Switch FORWARD/VENT contacts.

Astro Roof Relay

The Astro Roof Relay's operation is slightly different than most relays in that one set of contacts will change position each time the relay is energized but will not change position when the relay is de-energized. The other set of contacts in the relay operate in the same manner as a normal relay. The contacts will close when the relay is energized and open once the relay has de-energized.

Closing/Forward

When the Astro Roof Switch is in the FORWARD/VENT position, voltage is applied to the motor through the latching contacts in the Astro Roof Relay. The motor is grounded through the Astro Roof Switch REVERSE/CLOSE VENT contacts allowing the motor to run. Voltage is also applied to the Astro Roof Relay Coil when the Astro Roof Switch is in the FORWARD/ VENT position, but the relay is not energized until the Limit Switch contacts move to the ROOF CLOSED position. When the relay energizes, the latch contacts will open cutting power off to the motor. This prevents the Astro Roof from going into the VENT position.

Vent

When the VENT position is desired, voltage is applied to the Astro Roof Relay coil from the FORWARD/VENT contacts of the Astro Roof Switch. The relay will energize since the coil is grounded through the ROOF CLOSED contact of the Limit Switch and the REVERSE/CLOSE VENT contacts of the Astro Roof Switch. With the Astro Roof Relay energized the latch contacts close to apply voltage to the motor.

Vent Close

To close the Astro Roof from the vent position, voltage is applied to the motor from the REVERSE CLOSE VENT contacts of the Astro Roof Switch. The Astro Roof Relay will not be energized until the Limit Switch is in the ROOF CLOSED position. When the Astro Roof Relay energizes, the latch contacts will open the motor's ground circuit, This will prevent the Astro Roof from opening if the Astro Roof Switch is not released.
