Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair


NOTE: The throttle position sensor is a component of the Computerized Engine Control System, for diagnosis and testing procedures see COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.


Throttle Body Assembly (Typical):





REMOVAL:

1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
2. Remove TPS attaching screws and retainers.
3. Remove the throttle position sensor.

CAUTION: The TPS is an electrical component and must not be soaked in any liquid cleaner or solvent, as damage may result.

INSTALLATION:

1. With the throttle valve in the closed position, install the throttle position sensor on the throttle body assembly, making sure the TPS lever lines up with the TPS drive lever on the throttle shaft.
2. Install the retainers and TPS attaching screws, finger tighten only.
3. TPS adjustment procedure:
a. Connect a SCAN tool to the ALDL connector.
b. Turn the ignition switch ON.
c. Select TPS voltage display on the SCAN tool, and compare voltage against specifications.
d. Tighten attaching screws to 2.0 N-m (18 lb. in.)
e. Recheck TPS voltage.
