SUBJECT: CLICKING/RATTLING NOISE FROM FRONT OF ENGINE DURING BRAKING OR WHEN THE CAR IS TILTED FORWARD

MODELS AFFECTED: 1990 BROUGHAMS WITH 5.7L 1991 BROUGHAMS

Some 1990 Broughams equipped with a 5.7L or 1991 Brougham may experience a clicking or rattling noise from the front of the engine. The noise may be more apparent during braking or on inclines when the front of the car is lower than the rear.

Figure 1 - Contact of Camshaft Timing Gear and Weld Spot:

This noise may be caused by the camshaft timing gear contacting a weld spot on the inside of the timing chain cover. Refer to Figure 1.

To repair this condition:

1. Remove the front timing cover.

2. Support the outside of the cover at the spot weld and use a hammer to peen down the raised weld area.

3. File the remaining weld build up flush.
