The Vehicle Anti Theft system, or VATS, interrogator is an essential tool that can be used to read and generate PASS-Key key codes. The interrogator is tool number J-35628 (Kent-Moore tools). This tool is used to aid in diagnosis of all PASS-Key theft deterent systems.
To check an ignition key for a good pellet, insert the key into the interrogator and turn it "ON". The key code will appear in the window.
^ If an "E" is shown, the key pellet is either dirty and must be cleaned, or it is bad and should be replaced.
NOTE: Before connecting the interrogator to the ignition lock cylinder circuit, always verify vehicle key code and set the code into the interrogator using the key code knob. This will prevent programming an unprogrammed decoder module with an undesired key.
To test the lock cylinder and harness, perform the following steps:
1. Remove the drivers side sound deadener.
2. Disconnect the connector at the base of the steering column.
3. Insert the key into the ignition.
4. Turn the interrogator "ON". Watch the key code display. It should be the same as the the code read directly from the key. Rotate the lock cylinder through all positions as you observe the key code display. If the code changes as you rotate the ignition lock cylinder, or an "E" appears momentarily, this may show an intermittent condition.
