SUBJECT: WEBASTO SUNROOF SLIDING GLASS PANEL WEATHERSTRIP

MODELS AFFECTED: 1988-1991 ELDORADOS AND SEVILLES 1989-1992 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS WITHOUT CB5 VINYL TOP 1988-1992 BROUGHAMS WITHOUT CB5 VINYL TOP (1988 PLANT CODE "R" VIN POSITION 11)

This bulietin supersedes the portions of bulletin T-90-58 issued in March, 1990, under the heading of Glass Weatherstrip. This bulletin supersedes only the information regarding replacement of the glass panel weatherstrip. For general service information and procedures refer to the appropriate Cadillac Service Information Manual, Section 10. A factory-installed sunroof can be identified by CF5 on the Service Parts Identification Label.

An improved sunroof sliding glass panel weatherstrip is now available for service of Webasto sunroof-equipped vehicles (option CF5) which are not equipped with the CB5 full vinyl top option. This weatherstrip may be used on all 1988-1992 Cadillac vehicles equipped with the CF5 sunroof option except for the 1992 Eldorado and Seville.

The weatherstrip kit, P/N 3635717, includes a sliding glass panel weatherstrip seal and a one-ounce bottle of Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Black Toughened Instant Adhesive. Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive must be used when installing the sunroof weatherstrip. Failure to use Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive may result in failure of the weatherstrip to properly retain on the sliding glass panel molding, resulting in wind noise complaints. A sufficient quantity of Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive is included in the weatherstrip kit. This adhesive may also be purchased locally through specialized supply houses.

Adhesive Shelf Life:

Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive has a limited shelf life and should be refrigerated during storage. Before installing a sunroof weatherstrip seal as described in this bulletin, check the date code printed on the back label of the Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive which is included in the weatherstrip kit. The date code, shown in Figure 1, indicates the month and year in which the adhesive was manufactured. Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture. As a result, the dealer ordering this weatherstrip seal kit is responsible for the following:

^ Order only as many weatherstrip seal kits as you anticipate using over the next thirty days.

^ Upon receipt of the weatherstrip seal kit from GMSPO, open the package and inspect the date code located on the back label of the Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive bottle as shown in Figure 1. If the date code is greater than 12 months prior to the current date, return the weatherstrip seal kit to GMSPO utilizing procedures for defective material described in the GMSPO Parts Policy and Procedures Manual.

^ If weatherstrip seal kits have been received which will not be used within the upcoming thirty days, the Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive should be removed from the kit and refrigerated until use occurs.

^ If the weatherstrip seal kit is not used upon receipt at the dealer from GMSPO, and the adhesive was in-date at the time of receipt, it is the dealer's responsibility to ensure that the adhesive has not expired before use.

Figure 1:

^ If adhesive is left over after completion of the weatherstrip seal kit installation procedure, it should be refrigerated if it is intended to be used at a later date. In any case, Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive should be discarded if the date code on the back label of the bottle is greater than 12 months prior to the current date. Refer to Figure 1 for interpretation of the date code information.

Installation Procedure:

1. Remove sunroof sliding glass panel as described in the Roof Section of the appropriate Service Information Manual

2. Place glass panel upside down on a padded workbench, being careful not to scratch the glass surface.

3. Remove the old weatherstrip seal by peeling the seal off of the glass panel molding, starting at the butt joint.

4. Using a clean shop rag, remove any loose adhesive material from the weatherstrip seal mounting surface on the glass panel molding.

Figure 2:

5. Apply a bead of Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive to the glass panel molding/weatherstrip seal contact area. Refer to Figure 2.

6. Begin installation of the weatherstrip seal at either side of the glass panel. The position of the end of the weatherstrip determines the location of the weatherstrip butt joint. The butt joint must be positioned near the center of either the right or left side of the sliding glass panel (the shorter sides of the panel). THE BUTT JOINT CANNOT BE POSITIONED ON THE FRONT OR REAR OF THE PANEL (the longer sides). Refer to Figure 2.

7. Install weatherstrip seal around the sliding glass panel, making sure that the weatherstrip is tight against the glass panel molding. When you are within approximately six inches of the starting point allow the weatherstrip to hang free from the molding. Overlap the free end and the installed end of the seal as shown in View A of Figure 2.

8. Cut the weatherstrip seal, allowing 1/8-3/16 inches (3-5 mm) overlap of the two ends as shown in Figure 2. Be careful to cut the weatherstrip off squarely.

9. Apply a small amount of Loctite(R) Black Max(TM) 380 Adhesive to each end of the weatherstrip seal.

Figure 3:

10. Finish installation of the weatherstrip seal by first installing the free end of the weatherstrip at the butt joint and forcing the remainder of the weatherstrip into position as shown in Figure 3. Installing the weatherstrip in this manner will ensure a tight joint and correct sealing.

Figure 4:

11. After completing installation of the weatherstrip seal, allow the adhesive to cure for at least 10 minutes before installing the sliding glass panel in the vehicle. Refer to Figure 4.

12. Install the glass panel in vehicle using the procedures described in the appropriate Service Information Manual.

13. Adjust glass panel fore/aft and up/down position as described in the appropriate Service Information Manual.

UP/Down (Glass Panel Height) Specification:

Figure 5:

^ Adjust front corners of glass panel so that it is flush to 1.5 mm (flush to 0.060") BELOW roof panel. Refer to Figure

^ Adjust rear corners of glass panel so that it is flush to 1.5 mm (flush to 0.060") ABOVE roof panel. Refer to Figure 5.

Fore/Aft Specification:

^ The sliding glass panel weatherstrip seal should make continuous contact with the roof panel around the entire sunroof opening. To check for contact, completely close the sunroof and insert a business card or 0.040" thickness gage between the sunroof seal and roof panel. Check for seal-to-roof panel contact by sliding the card around the entire seal contact area. The card should drag slightly as it is pulled between the seal and the roof panel.

^ If the gap is excessively wide or narrow at the front or rear, adjust the glass panel fore/aft position as described in the appropriate Service Information Manual.
