SUBJECT:
COSMETIC RUST AT SIDE DOOR WINDOW BELT REVEAL MOLDING
MODELS AFFECTED:
1993 FLEETWOOD BROUGHAMS
Some 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Broughams built prior to VIN 1300 may experience a condition of cosmetic rust at end of side door window belt reveal moldings and behind sideview mirror.
This may be caused when the molding material corrodes at exposed cut ends.
NOTICE:
Follow label instructions for Loctite or 3M solution.
1. Clean all the affected areas thoroughly with window cleaner so they are free of dirt or rust. Refer to Figure 1.
2. Vehicle must be at room temperature (60-80~F; 16-27~C).
3. Remove attachment screw (one per molding) located on inside of door, at rear of front door, and at front of rear door. Refer to Figure 3. This screw helps to hold the end cap in place. The end cap cannot be completely removed.
NOTICE:
Immediately clean up any Loctite or 3M solution that may get on the vehicle interior or exterior paint.
4. Use Q-tip small artist brush, or equivalent to apply and saturate the affected areas with the Loctite or 3M solution (Loctite Extend 754 or 3M Rust Avenger Rust Converter Kit # 03179 or equivalent). Refer to Figure 2. If possible, for easier access use a thin-bladed spatula or equivalent to carefully pry and hold the end cap 1 mm (1/16") from the molding while applying the Loctite or 3M solution too small for the spatula, do not attempt to pry on the end cap as this would damage the end cap and molding. Smaller gaps should be handled by applying solution with artist brush or equivalent and allowing it to seep in. Refer to Figure 4.
5. After five minutes clean off any excess Loctite or 3M solution with a dry cloth or a cloth wetted, but not saturated, with window cleaner. Do not use any solvents for clean up.
NOTICE:
Be sure that the window cleaner has completely evaporated before applying another coat of the Loctite or 3M solution.
6. After fifteen minutes apply a second coat of solution and clean up any excess as stated above.
7. Wait fifteen minutes, apply a third coat of solution, and clean up any excess as stated above.
8. Seal the ends of the molding with a gray strip caulk such as Kent Products Seal-N-Calk # 10315 or equivalent. Remove excess sealer with towel or buff with buffing wheel.
9. Reinstall the attaching screws.
10. Do not wash vehicle or allow it to get wet for twenty four hours.
