SUBJECT:
RATTLE OR LOOSE LUMBER-TYPE NOISE FROM REAR STRUT AREA (REPLACE MOUNTING NUTS AND TORQUE TO NEW SPEC)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1993 DEVILLES AND FLEETWOODS
On some 1991-1993 DeVilles and Fleetwoods a rattling or loose lumber-type noise is heard from the rear of the car especially on bumps. The noise can be isolated to the rear struts.
The cause of the noise is the interface between the upper strut mount and the body of the vehicle. The strut itself does not cause the noise.
To correct this condition use the following procedure:
1. Remove the two strut tower mounting nuts on each strut from inside the trunk.
2. Install new nuts, P/N 11515743, and torque to 50 N-m (37 lbs.ft.).
Whenever performing this procedure always replace the nuts on both the right and left rear struts.
Replacing the strut assembly is not required to correct this condition.
