Removal and Replacement
TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONTools Required:
^ J-28467 Engine Support Fixture
^ J-28664 Transaxle Support Fixture
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner, assembly.
3. All electrical connectors.
4. Engine harness bracket.
5. Shift cable bracket.
6. Engine oil cooler line, vacuum hose and fuel line bracket.
7. Vacuum modulator.
8. Transaxle filler tube and transaxle mounting bracket.
9. 4 bell housing bolts in positions 2, 3, 4 and 5.
10. Install engine support fixture and note position of fixture hooks.
IMPORTANT
^ Care must be taken when attaching right rear lift hook to bracket to assure clearance to the A/C accumulator line.
11. Both front tire and wheel assemblies.
12. Raise vehicle, ensure suitable support.
13. Right and left stabilizer link bolts, ball joint cotter pins and nuts.
14. Separate both hall joints from steering knuckles.
15. Drive axles from right and left hub.
16. Drive axles from transaxles.
17. A/C splash shield, right and left wheelhouse splash shield.
18. Power steering return line bracket and ABS pump from bracket.
19. Flywheel cover.
20. Flywheel from converter.
21. Power steering line and trans lines.
22. Right side cradle mount bolts and motor mount nuts.
23. Left side cradle mount bolts.
24. #1 cradle mount insulator bolt and left cradle member (separate right front corner first).
25. Fasten transaxle to transaxle jack.
26. Bracket assembly from transaxle mount bracket.
27. Engine to transaxle bracket and left side transaxle.
28. Bell housing bolts in positions 1 and 6.
^ To remove/install at position #6, it is necessary to use a 3' socket wrench extension to access the bolt through the right wheelhouse opening.
29. Transaxle assembly with transaxle jack.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Lower bell housing bolts (152/153).
Tighten
^ Bell housing bolts/studs to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).
IMPORTANT
^ Studs, positions #2,3.
^ Bolts, positions #1, 4, 5 and 6.
3. Converter to flexplate bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 63 N.m (46 lbs. ft.).
4. Flexplate splash shield.
5. Cooler lines to case.
Tighten
^ Fitting nuts (111) to 21 N.m (15 lbs. ft.).
6. To reassemble, reverse transaxle removal Steps 1 through 29 listed above.
Tighten
^ #1 insulator mount bolt to 100 N.m (74 lbs. ft.).
^ Cradle to cradle mounting bolts, all positions to 100 N.m (74 lbs. ft.).
^ Upper transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 100 N.m (74 lbs. ft.).
^ Side transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 70 N.m (50 lbs. ft.).
^ Rear (left) transaxle mount nuts to 45 N.m (35 lbs. ft.).
^ Engine mount to cradle attachments 45 N.m (35 lbs. ft.).
^ Right rear mount bracket to transaxle bolts to 70 N.m (50 lbs. ft.).
^ Right rear mount bracket nuts to 45 N.m (35 lbs. ft.).
^ Stabilizer link bolts to 17 N.m (13 lbs. ft.).
^ Ball joint nuts to 110 N.m (81 lbs. ft.).
^ Shift cable bracket to transaxle bolts 24 N.m (18 lbs. ft.).
^ Wheel lug nuts to 140 N.m (100 lbs. ft.).
ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ Shift linkage.
^ Nut attaching mount to bracket.
^ Nut to 31 N.m (23 lbs. ft.).
