SUBJECT:
REVEAL MOLDING WARPAGE

MODELS AFFECTED:
1992-1993 ELDORADOS

Some 1992 and 1993 Eldorados built before 1993 VIN breakpoint PU604523 may exhibit a condition where the windshield and rear window reveal molding retainers warp in high temperatures. The condition appears as small bumps or waves under the portion of the reveal which lays on the glass. The molding assembly is a two-piece design consisting the reveal, or outward piece, and several retainers which attach the assembly to the glass. The retainer upper leg is the portion which is warping. Refer to Figure 1.

To repair this condition, replace the molding assembly with the new molding assemblies listed. Retainers have been redesigned to eliminate the warpage condition.

It is necessary to remove and reuse the glass for this repair. For the rear window a cold knife can be used for urethane cutting. Care must be taken at the sides so as not to damage the defogger grid and wire. Cutting the rear window urethane from inside the vehicle will help prevent damage. To prevent windshield breakage use a urethane cutting wire (piano or music wire). Use of a cold knife on the windshield will chip the glass edge and lead to breakage. If an independent glass shop is used for this work, inform them of the above requirements. Do not separate the retainers from the molding and attempt to install separately.

NOTE:
Service Information Manual sections are given in parenthesis for reference.

Remove:

1. Reveal molding from retainer. Pry one end loose and pull away from the glass (10-2).

2. (Windshield) Pillar garnish moldings (10-9); sunshades and roof console (eyeglass holder) to loosen headliner (10-9); instrument panel upper trim panel (8C).

3. Carefully cut and remove glass. If urethane cutting is done from the inside, protect the glass blackout area from scrapes and scratches by masking with tape.

Clean:

1. Clean and prepare body opening and glass surface according to procedures published in Section 10-2 of the Service Information Manual.

Install:

1. Molding onto glass (10-2).

2. Glass into opening.

3. Sunshades (10-9); roof console (eyeglass holder) (10-9); pillar garnish moldings (10-9); instrument panel upper trim panel (8C); headliner (10-9); and quarter trim (10-7).
