Engine: Service and Repair
Remove or Disconnect
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Air cleaner.
4. Vehicle hood.
5. Cooling fan.
6. Accessory drive belt.
7. Upper radiator hose and heater hose from thermostat housing.
8. Wire connectors and reposition.
^ Oil pressure switch
^ Distributor
^ EGR solenoid
^ Engine temperature switch
^ ISC
^ TPS
^ Coolant Temperature Sensor and injectors at rail connector
^ MAT sensor
^ Oxygen sensor
^ Generator
^ Ground wire at alternator bracket
9. Throttle cable from throttle lever.
10. Cruise control diaphragm with bracket and move out of way.
11. Oil and transmission cooler lines from radiator.
12. Radiator.
13. Oil cooler lines from oil filter adapter and remove lines.
14. Oil cooler line bracket at transmission.
15. Air cleaner mounting bracket.
16. Oil filter housing adapter.
17. Strut tower cross car brace (if heated windshield equipped, disconnect from alternator).
18. Right front heater hose.
19. P/S line brace on right cylinder head.
20. P/S and tensioner assembly and position out of the way toward front of engine.
21. Discharge A/C system.
22. A/C lines to accumulator and condenser.
Important
^ Carefully bleed fuel pressure at fuel line test port (schrader valve) using a suitable tool and container or rag to catch fuel.
23. Fuel lines at fuel rail.
24. Fuel line bracket at transmission and move fuel lines out of way.
25. Vacuum modulator line and power brake vacuum line and reposition.
26. Raise vehicle.
27. Starter heat shield.
28. Electrical connectors from starter and ground wires from block.
29. Exhaust cross-under pipe.
30. Starter.
31. Two flexplate covers.
32. Three flexplate to converter bolts.
33. A/C compressor lower dust shield.
34. R/F tire and wheel assembly.
35. Outer wheelhouse plastic shield.
36. Remove transaxle to engine support - right rear.
37. Right rear trans/engine mounting bolt.
38. Lower engine damper nut.
39. Front engine mount nuts and right rear trans mount bolts.
40. Oxygen sensor wires and heater bypass bracket from right side of vehicle.
41. Lower vehicle.
42. Five top engine/trans mounting bolts.
43. Install engine lift chain.
Important
^ Care must be taken when attaching right rear lift hook to bracket to assure clearance to the A/C accumulator line.
44. Engine assembly.
Install or Connect
1. Raise transaxle with a separate jack to engage engine.
2. Lower engine into chassis on an angle matching the transaxle. Engage dowels on block to transaxle case.
Important
^ Make sure that converter is properly positioned to the flexplate and engaged in front pump of transaxle.
^ During this operation, use care not to damage any items in the engine compartment (e.g. dipstick tube, throttle linkage, oil cooler lines, etc.). Some maneuvering of the engine is sometimes required.
3. Upper five transmission bell housing to engine bolts.
4. Lower and remove floor jack from transaxle.
5. Lower engine making sure that it is seated on mount properly.
6. Remove lifting equipment.
7. Raise car on hoist.
8. Support engine.
9. Right rear trans/engine mounting bolt.
10. Right side engine brace.
11. Remove engine support.
12. Oxygen sensor wires and heater bypass bracket from right side of vehicle.
13. Front engine mount nuts and right rear trans mount bolts.
14. Lower engine damper nut.
15. Outer wheelhouse plastic shield.
16. R/F tire and wheel assembly.
17. A/C compressor lower dust shield.
18. Three flexplate to converter bolts.
19. Two flexplate covers.
20. Starter.
21. Exhaust crossover pipe.
22. Electrical connectors from starter and ground wires from block.
23. Starter heat shield.
24. Lower vehicle.
25. Vacuum modulator line and vacuum hose from power brake booster.
26. Fuel line bracket at transmission.
27. Fuel lines at fuel rail.
28. A/C lines to accumulator and condenser.
29. P/S and tensioner assembly.
30. P/S line brace on right cylinder head.
31. Right front heater hose.
32. Strut tower cross car brace.
33. Oil filter adapter.
34. Air cleaner mounting bracket.
35. Oil cooler line bracket at transmission.
36. Oil cooler lines to oil filter adapter.
37. Radiator.
38. Engine oil and trans oil cooler lines to radiator.
39. Cruise control diaphragm with bracket.
40. Wire connectors.
^ ISC
^ TPS
^ Injectors and Coolant Temperature Sensor at Rail Connector
^ MAT Sensor
^ Oxygen Sensor
^ Ground Wire at generator bracket
^ Oil Pressure Switch
^ Distributor
^ EGR Solenoid

41. Throttle cable to throttle lever.
42. Accessory drive belt.
43. Upper radiator hose and heater hose from thermostat housing.
44. Cooling fan.
45. A/C accumulator hose brace.
46. Vehicle hood.
47. Air cleaner.
48. Engine coolant.
49. Negative battery cable.
50. Charge A/C system.
51. Run engine and inspect for leaks.
