Distributor Removal & Installation
Remove Or Disconnect1. Ignition switch battery feed wire from distributor cap. Ignition coil connectors from cap. DO NOT use a screwdriver or tool to release the locking tabs.
2. Four bolts from distributor cap and move cap out of the way.
IMPORTANT
^ Location of cap 'doghouse' must be in the same area on reinstallation for sufficient clearance for adjustment.
3. Six terminal PCM harness form distributor.
4. Distributor clamp nut and hold down clamp. Use special tool J 29791 or equivalent to remove hold down nut.
5. Note position of rotor, then pull distributor up until rotor just stops turning counterclockwise and again note position of rotor. Remove distributor.
IMPORTANT
^ Note that a thrust washer is used between the distributor drive gear and the crankcase. This washer may stick to the bottom of the distributor as it is removed. Before replacing the distributor, verify that the thrust washer is located in the crankcase at the bottom of the distributor bore.
Install or Connect
1. Distributor with rotor in same position as noted in removal Step 5.
2. Hold down clamp and distributor clamp nut lightly snug but do not tighten nut at this time.
3. Six terminal PCM harness.
4. Distributor cap and four retaining bolts.
5. Ignition coil connector to cap.
6. Ignition switch battery feed wire.
Adjust
^ Ignition Initial Timing to 10° BTDC (any speed less than 800 RPM).
Tighten
^ Distributor hold-down nut using special tool J 29791 or equivalent to 25 Nm (20 lbs. ft.).
