Wiring Diagram:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

The steering wheel rotation sensor is a potentiometer that can continuously rotate with one wiper in the potentiometer portion of the sensor. The Variable Effort Steering (VES) steering wheel rotation sensor is monitored for shorts to grounds or opens CKTs 1573 or 1574.

TEST CONDITIONS

This DTC is set when IGN 1 is "ON" and steering wheel rotation sensor input is 0.254 volts or less.

FAILURE CONDITIONS

This DTC will set when this fault lasts longer than 0.2 of a second.

ACTION TAKEN

DTC 44 will set. The VES system will disable and power steering will return to normal.

TEST DESCRIPTION

Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

1. This test checks for an open or short in steering wheel rotation sensor.

2. This tests will check for a short to ground on CKT 1573 or CKT 1574.

3. This test will check for an open in CKT 1573.

4. This test will check for an open in CKT 1574.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS

Check the CCM and the steering wheel rotation sensor connectors for loose or damaged connections. If problem is intermittent do the "wiggle test" with the connections and wiring while the power steering system is operating. A Tech 1 can be used to monitor the steering wheel rotation sensor input voltage as the wheel is turned or road tested.
