Distributor Disassembly, Test and Reassembly
Ignition Distributor Assembly Components:
Testing Pickup Coil Assembly:
Removing Distributor Ignition Control Module:
TOOL REQUIRED
GM special tool, J24642-F, High Energy Ignition Module Tester, is required to perform the ignition control module test procedure described below.
DISASSEMBLE
1. Distributor cap (1) (Refer to accompanying image for numbered references) by loosening ignition distributor cap bolts/screws (23).
2. Rotor (9) from distributor shaft (18).
3. Pickup coil leads from ignition control module (15).
A. Connect ohmmeter to pickup coil lead terminal and to distributor base.
B. Observe ohmmeter. Ohmmeter should read infinite at all times. If not, pickup coil (17) is faulty.
C. Connect ohmmeter to both terminals of pickup coil lead. Flex pickup coil leads by hand to check for intermittent opens.
D. Ohmmeter should read one steady value between 500-1500 ohms as pickup coil leads are flexed by hand. If not, pickup coil (17) is faulty.
4. Drive gear pin (14) from shaft gear (13).
5. Shaft gear (13), shaft thrust washer (12), and shaft washer (11) from shaft (18).
6. Shaft (18).
7. Pry off pickup coil shield retainer (10). Discard old retainer (10). A new retainer (10) will be needed for assembly.
8. Pickup coil shield (19).
9. Pickup coil (17).
10. Ignition control module (15) from ignition distributor base by loosening ignition control module bolts/ screws (22).
11. Test ignition control module (15) using J24642-F. If ignition control module (15) is faulty, replace with a new ignition control module (15).
ASSEMBLE
IMPORTANT: Do not wipe grease from ignition control module (15) or distributor base if same ignition control module (15) is to be installed. If a new ignition control module (15) is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with it. Spread the grease on the metal face of the ignition control module (15) and on the distributor base where the ignition control module (15) seats. This grease is necessary for ignition control module (15) cooling.
1. Ignition control module (15) to ignition distributor base. Tighten ignition control module bolts/screws (22) to 2 Nm (18 in lb).
2. Pickup coil (17).
3. Pickup coil leads to ignition control module (15).
4. Pickup coil shield (19).
5. Snap on new pickup coil shield retainer (10).
6. Shaft (18).
7. Shaft washer (11), shaft thrust washer (12), and shaft gear (13). Align drill spot in shaft gear (13) with groove in top of shaft (18).
8. Drive in gear pin (14).
9. Rotor (9).
10. Distributor cap (1). Tighten distributor cap bolts/screws (23) to 2 Nm (18 in lb).
