Powertrain Control

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The engine used in this vehicle has controls to reduce emissions while maintaining excellent driveablity and fuel economy. The Engine Control Module (ECM) is the heart of the Computer Command Control system to control the ignition and fuel systems.

The ECM can monitor a number of engine and vehicle operating functions which control the following systems:

^ Fuel Delivery
^ Distributor Ignition (DI)
^ Ignition Control (IC)
^ Air management
^ Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
^ [1][2]Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)

SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
The ECM has the capability to diagnose faults in the sensors, input switches, components and systems they control. When the ECM recognizes a problem, it may turn "ON" the "Service Engine Soon" Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lamp to alert the driver that a malfunction has occurred. The MIL is located in the instrument cluster.

A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in the computer memory for retrieval by the technician. The DTC will be lost in memory after a certain number of engine starts or if power is removed from the ECM.
