Distributor Replacement
Ignition Distributor Assembly (Typical):
Ignition Distributor Assembly Components:
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
2. Air cleaner.
3. Electrical connector from distributor assembly (6) (Refer to accompanying images for numbered references).
4. Wire assemblies from distributor cap (1).
5. Distributor cap (1) by loosening bolts/screws (23).
6. Note position of distributor rotor (9) and distributor housing position in relation to engine.
7. Bolt/screw (3) and distributor clamp (2).
8. Distributor assembly (6).
a. Note rotation of distributor rotor (9) as distributor assembly (6) is pulled up and mark final position.
b. Tilt distributor assembly (6) toward driver's side of vehicle and pull out.
9. Gasket (21) from distributor assembly (6).
INSTALL OR CONNECT
IMPORTANT: To ensure correct timing of the distributor assembly (6), the distributor assembly (6) must be installed with the distributor rotor correctly positioned as noted during removal.
1. Gasket (21) to distributor assembly (6).
2. Distributor assembly (6). Tilt distributor assembly (6) toward driver's side and slide in.
3. Distributor clamp (2) and bolt/screw (3).Tighten bolt/screw (3) to 36 Nm (27 ft lb).
4. Distributor cap (1). Tighten bolts/screws (23) to 2 Nm (18 in lb).
5. Wire assemblies to distributor cap (1).
6. Electrical connectors to distributor assembly (6).
7. Air cleaner.
8. Check ignition timing. Refer to Distributor/Adjustments.
REESTABLISHING DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY POSITION
If engine was accidently cranked after distributor assembly was removed, the following procedure can be used for installing.
1. Remove No. 1 spark plug assembly.
2. Place finger over No. 1 spark plug hole and crank engine slowly until compression is felt.
3. Align timing mark on pulley to "0" on engine timing indicator.
4. Turn distributor rotor (9) to point between number 1 and number 8 spark plug towers on distributor cap (1).
5. Install distributor assembly (6) and connect ignition feed wire. It may be necessary to rotate oil pump driveshaft assembly.
6. Install distributor cap and spark plug wires.
7. Check engine timing. Refer to Distributor/Adjustments.
