Engine Control Module: Service and Repair

ECM Mounting:






When replacing a production Engine Control Module (ECM) with a service ECM, transfer the broadcast code and production number from the production unit to the service unit. Also, during replacement, the PROM must be removed from the ECM being replaced and transferred to the new unit. Refer to Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) for procedures.

NOTE: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the ECM, Do Not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative Battery cable.
2. Right side sound insulator.
3. Right trim molding.
4. Right side kick panel.
5. ECM bracket attaching screws.
6. Connectors to ECM.
7. ECM from passenger compartment.
8. ECM mounting bracket.
9. PROM access cover.
10 PROM from ECM.

NOTE: If PROM is being replaced refer to PROM - Programmable Read Only Memory.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. PROM to ECM.
2. PROM access cover.
3. ECM mounting bracket.
4. ECM into passenger compartment.
5. Connectors to ECM.
6. ECM bracket attaching screws.
7. Right side kick panel.
8. Right trim molding.
9. Right side sound insulator.
10 Negative Battery cable.


INSPECT

1. Turn ignition "ON."
2. Enter diagnostics.
^ Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 12 should appear.
^ If the "Service Engine Soon" light is "ON" with no trouble codes, or if DTC 52 is present the PROM is not fully inserted or defective.
