Accessories and Optional Equipment: Description and Operation

The Retained Accessory Power (RAP) System provides power to operate a number of vehicle accessories after the Ignition Switch has been turned to OFF or LOCK.

When the Ignition Switch is turned to RUN, battery voltage is applied through the normally closed contacts of RAP Relay No. 1 to the Power Window Switches, Astro Roof Control Module, Trunk Lid Release Switch and the coil of RAP Relay No. 2. When RAP Relay No. 2 energizes, it provides battery voltage to the Radio and Wiper/Washer Switch.

Voltage is applied at all times to the RAP Relay No. 1 coil through the RH Underhood Fuse Block Fuse 2. When the Ignition Switch is turned to OFF or LOCK, the Body Computer Module (BCM) senses that the Ignition Switch is no longer in RUN and grounds the RAP Relay No. 1 coil at BCM connector C1, terminal A4, if all doors are closed and Interior Light Switch OFF. When RAP Relay No. 1 energizes, battery voltage is applied through the relay's closed contacts to the Power Window Switch, Trunk Lid Release Switch and Astro Roof Control Module. All of these accessories continue to operate.

Voltage is also applied through the RAP Relay No. I contacts to the RAP Relay No. 2 coil. When RAP Relay No. 2 energizes, battery voltage is applied through RH Underhood Fuse Block Fuse 2 and the closed RAP Relay No. 2 contacts to the Radio, Wiper/Washer Switch and BCM terminal C2/C12.

The BCM removes ground from the RAP Relay No. 1 coil, de-energizing the relay after 10 minutes or when any door is opened. When RAP Relay No. 1 de-energizes, voltage is removed from the RAP Relay No. 2 coil. Since the Ignition Switch is in OFF or LOCK, no voltage is applied to the normally closed RAP relays' contacts and power is no longer applied to the accessories. However, if the Ignition Switch is moved to ACCY, battery voltage is applied to the Radio and Wiper/Washer Switch through the normally closed RAP Relay No. 2 contacts.

If any vehicle door is opened, the BCM's Door Jamb Switch Input is grounded. If this occurs while the RAP circuits are active, the BCM removes ground from the RAP Relay No. 1 coil deactivating the RAP circuits.
