Air Bag: Description and Operation

The steering wheel module is composed of an inflator assembly, electrical initiator and inflatable bag which is installed in the steering wheel hub area and covered by a vinyl trim cover.
The passenger inflator module (if equipped) is composed of an inflator assembly, electrical initiator and inflatable bag which is installed in the instrument panel above the instrument panel compartment.
When an accident of sufficient force is detected, the inflatable bag is deployed by igniting a small explosive device inflating the air bag. The trim cover then opens at seams which rupture as the system is deployed.
