P058
Circuit Description
Code P058 is an indication that the Fuel Enable Input has failed after a good signal was received in a given engine
run cycle. The PASS-Key(R) system enables engine operation by:
1. Allowing the starter motor to engage.
2. Issuing a Fuel Enable signal to the PCM.
Once the engine is running the PCM continuously monitors the Fuel Enable signal, testing for a circuit or PASS-Key(R) module failure that would prohibit a positive fuel enable on future ignition cycles. The PCM will not cancel fuel injection after it has been approved within a given ignition cycle. Therefore, stalling conditions cannot be the result of PASS-Key(R) system failures.
Test Condition(s)
1. Engine run indication asserted.
2. PASS-Key(R) engine start timer expired.
Failure Condition(s)
PASS-Key(R) Fuel Enable Input is not correct but has been correct within this engine run cycle.
Action Taken
1. 'THEFT SYSTEM PROBLEM, CAR MAY NOT RESTART' message.
2. PCM will enable fuel injection on future ignition cycles regardless of the PASS-Key(R) enable input status.
Notes on Fault Tree
1. If engine will crank, then part of the PASS-Key(R) system is operating correctly.
2. Checking PCM output. There will be 2-3 volts present at PCM terminal '2C8', if the PCM is OK and CKT 229 is not open or shorted.
3. Checking if PCM is recognizing cranking fuel enable signal from the PASS-Key(R) Decoder Module.
4. Checking CKT 229 for a short to voltage or an open. If CKT 229 OK, PASS-Key(R) Decoder module is not able to produce a cranking fuel enable signal.
Notes on Intermittents
If Code P058 is set intermittently the following could be a cause:
1. Intermittent short to ground or voltage on CKT 229.
2. Intermittent open in CKT 229.
3. Intermittent loss of power or ground to the PASS-Key(R) Decoder Module. The PASS-Key(R) Decoder Module reads the ignition key once each ignition cycle when the ignition is first turned on, therefore, faults in the key pellet and circuits to the ignition lock cylinder can cause a no start condition but cannot cause a stall or Code P058.
