Fluid Leak from the Power Steering Reservoir (Diagnose/Replace Hose Clamps or Reservoir)

Models:
1994 Cadillac Concours, DeVille, Eldorado, Seville

Condition

Some owners of the above listed vehicles may comment on a fluid leak or what appears to be a fluid leak from the power steering reservoir.

Correction

Important: To correctly diagnose a leak and avoid unnecessary parts replacement, the following procedures must be followed.

1. Check the power steering fluid level in the reservoir. If it is full, it is possible that there is no leak at all. Overspill can occur and give the appearance of a substantial leak.

2. Wipe clean any spillage/leakage of power steering fluid.

3. Start the engine and exercise the power steering system by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock several times.

Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full lock position longer than five seconds as damage to the power steering pump may occur.

4. Stop the engine and inspect the hose connection at the fluid reservoir and the weld joint between the two halves of the reservoir for evidence of a fluid leak. If fluid seepage is seen, continue with the following steps.

5. Check the hose connections at the fluid reservoir for loose clamps. Loose clamps may indicate clamp load variation and hose material creep leading to fluid seepage. Tighten any loose clamps.

6. If fluid seepage is near the weld joint between the two halves of the fluid reservoir, replace the fluid reservoir with P/N 26045202 for 4.9L engines and P/N 26041335 for 4.6L engines. Refer to Section 3B in the appropriate Service Manual.
