Final Drive Assembly
FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY 4T80-E TRANSAXLEREMOVAL
1. Use a pin punch to drive out shaft retaining pin, then remove differential pinion shaft, pinion gear and pinion thrust washers.
2. Remove right side gear and output shaft.
3. Remove right differential thrust washer, then output shaft snap ring. Inspect snap ring for damage.
4. Remove left side gear and left differential thrust washer, then sun gear/ carrier thrust bearing.
5. Pry out seal on sun gear using a screwdriver. If bearing needs replacement, remove rolled pin and retainer. Slide two planet pinions aside (carefully, so needle bearings do not fall out of carrier). After gaining access, remove bearing, then reverse procedure to install bearing.
INSPECTION
1. Inspect thrust bearings and washers for wear or damage.
2. Using a feeler gauge, check planet pinion to carrier clearance. Clearance should be 0.2-0.3 mm.
3. Carrier must be replaced if gears are out of specifications.
4. Inspect differential gears for wear or damage.
5. Inspect pinion shaft for scoring or damage.
INSTALLATION
1. Install left differential thrust washer, then left side gear.
2. Install right differential thrust washer, then right side gear and new output shaft snap ring.
3. Install pinion thrust washers and pinion shaft, then shaft retaining pin.
4. Install thrust washer and bearing.
5. Press new seal (long lip) into sun gear using a piece of metal stock. Seal lip should face forward clutch when sun gear is installed.
