Date: October, 1994
Subject:
Park Brake Will Not Release or Releases Slowly (Adjust or Replace Park Brake Vacuum Release Switch)
Models:
1994 Cadillac Concours, DeVille, Eldorado, Seville with Column Shift Transaxles
VIN Breakpoints: Concours and DeVille: Before VIN 217396
Eldorado: Before VIN 605727
Seville: Before VIN 818061
Condition
Some owners may comment that the park brake will not release or releases slowly. This may be more prevalent in cold ambient conditions.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a misadjusted or defective park brake vacuum release switch.
Correction
1. Remove the left hand lower I/P sound insulator by removing two 7 mm screws and (on Eldorado and Seville) disconnecting the courtesy lamp connector.
2. Inspect the park brake vacuum release switch on the steering column (see illustration). If the switch has a retaining tab for the vacuum harness, replace the switch with a switch without the tab, P/N 1630023. Switches with a tab have been identified as having a potential internal leak.
3. If the switch does not have a tab or the switch is being replaced, check adjustment of the switch (see illustration). There should be approximately 2 mm of overlap between the two halves of the switch. To adjust the switch, back out the two metal retaining clips on the switch (if the switch is being adjusted on the column, it may only be possible to reach one clip). Move two halves of the switch to achieve proper overlap. Push in retaining clips.
4. Check for proper park brake release.
5. Install the left hand lower I/P sound insulator.
