Service Procedure
SERVICE PROCEDURECAUTION:
THE SDM CAN MAINTAIN SUFFICIENT VOLTAGE TO CAUSE A DEPLOYMENT FOR UP TO TEN (10) SECONDS AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED "OFF", THE BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED, OR THE FUSE POWERING THE SDM IS REMOVED MANY SERVICE PROCEDURES REQUIRE REMOVAL OF THE SIR FUSE AND DISCONNECTION OF THE DEPLOYMENT LOOPS TO AVOID AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT. IF THE INFLATOR MODULES ARE DISCONNECTED FROM THE DEPLOYMENT LOOP AS NOTED IN THE PROCEDURE THAT FOLLOWS, SERVICE CAN BEGIN IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT WAITING FOR THE TEN (10) SECOND TIME PERIOD TO EXPIRE.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and verify that the "AIR BAG" warning lamp flashes seven (7) times and then turns "OFF".
^ If the "AIR BAG" warning lamp does not operate as described, perform the SIR Diagnostic System Check as described in Section 9J of the appropriate service manual before proceeding.
IMPORTANT:
DIAGNOSIS, REPAIRS AND/OR PARTS NECESSARY TO ASSURE THAT THE S.I.R. SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY BEFORE STARTING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE PROCEDURE SHOULD BE CHARGED UNDER REGULAR WARRANTY LABOR CODES AND TIMES.
2. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position and remove the key.
4. Remove the "SIR" fuse from the engine compartment fuse block (fuse block located in trunk on Concours/DeVille models).
5. Remove the left hand sound insulator from the under the steering column.
6. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) and disconnect the yellow 2-way connector near the base of the steering column. See figure 1.
7. Remove the CPA and disconnect the yellow 2-way connector from the passenger inflator module pigtail through the trap door in the instrument panel compartment. See figure 2.
8. Operate the seat to the full-forward, full-upward position.
9. Remove the two bolts that retain the rear of the driver's seat track adjuster to the floor pan See figure 3.
10. Tilt the seat assembly forward and disconnect the power seat electrical connectors.
11. Pull the seat assembly rearward and disengage the front retaining hooks from the floor pan. See figure 3.
12. Move the seat rearward to the rear seat floor.
13. Using a sharp utility knife, carefully cut four (4) slits in the carpeting over the SDM as shown in figure 4.
14. Pull carpet clear as required to remove the connector position assurance (CPA) and disconnect the electrical connector.
15. Remove the fasteners that secure the SDM to the floor pan and remove the SDM. See figure 4.
IMPORTANT:
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE SDM IF OXIDATION/CORROSION IS FOUND IN THE NEXT STEP.
16. Inspect the SDM for the presence of potting compound (clear sealer) at the locations shown in figure 5.
If potting compound is present at the locations indicated in figure 5, proceed to step # 19 of this service procedure.
If potting compound is not present, proceed to step # 17 of this service procedure.
NOTICE:
THE AREAS TO BE SEALED MUST BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED WITH A SCOTCH BRITE(R) PAD BEFORE APPLYING THE POTTING COMPOUND. FAILURE TO PROPERLY CLEAN AND PREPARE THE SURFACES TO SE SEALED MAY RESULT IN AN INEFFECTIVE SEAL, WHICH COULD ALLOW WATER TO ENTER THE SDM CASE. IF WATER ENTERS THE SDM CASE, AN UNWANTED AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT COULD OCCUR.
17. Thoroughly clean the exterior of the SDM case using the 3M Scotch Brite(R) pad provided. Pay careful attention to the areas where potting compound will be applied, so that the potting compound can bond to a clean surface. If necessary, carefully remove any light oxidation/corrosion from the case. Using a clean shop cloth, carefully remove any cleaning residue from the surface of the SDM case.
18. For controlled flow of potting compound, cut off the tip of one of the applicator tips to provide the smallest possible opening (approximately 2 mm inner diameter). Carefully apply Loctite 5140(R) potting compound as shown in figure 5 per the following instructions:
NOTICE:
DO NOT ALLOW POTTING COMPOUND TO CONTACT THE PINS IN THE CONNECTOR BODY. ALSO, MAKE SURE THAT THE CPA/LOCKING MECHANISM IS CLEAR AND WILL FULLY ENGAGE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR WHEN RE-CONNECTING THE HARNESS TO THE SDM.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE POTTING COMPOUND BE ALLOWED TO SET UP FOR 15 MINUTES AFTER APPLICATION AROUND THE CONNECTOR BODY, AND FOR 25 MINUTES AFTER THE REMAINING APPLICATION. INSTALLATION OF THE SDM BACK INTO THE VEHICLE 6EFORE THE POTTING COMPOUND HAS HAD ADEQUATE TIME TO SET UP MAY RESULT IN AN INEFFECTIVE SEAL, WHICH COULD ALLOW WATER TO ENTER THE SDM CASE. IF WATER ENTERS THE SDM CASE, AN UNWANTED AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT COULD OCCUR.
^ Position the SDM so that the electrical connector is facing up. Carefully apply potting compound around the connector body as shown in figure 5. Allow the potting corn pound to set up for 15 minutes before repositioning the SDM for the next application of potting compound.
^ After the potting compound applied around the connector body has set up for 15 minutes, carefully apply potting compound to the four (4) screws on the sides (right, and rear) of the SDM, making sure that the potting compound fully penetrates the area around the base of the screws.
^ Position the SDM so that the bottom is facing up. Carefully apply potting compound to the case joint, making sure that the entire length of the joint is sealed. Apply potting compound to the two (2) screw recesses in the bottom of the case as shown in figure 5. Apply sufficient potting compound to the screw cavities to fill them, but do not over flow onto the bottom of the case. Allow the potting compound to set up for 25 minutes before re-installing the SDM into the vehicle.
If only one SDM is being sealed immediately remove and discard the applicator tip, and securely install the cap to the tube. Each tube of potting compound will service eight vehicles; retain unused portion to service future vehicles. Additional applicator tips have been provided (8 tips per tube of potting compound) so that it is not necessary to save the applicator tip for reuse on another vehicle at a later date.
NOTICE:
THE POTTING COMPOUND WILL NOT BE FULLY CURED WHEN RE.INSTALLING THE SDM TO THE VEHICLE. USE CARE WHEN HANDLING THE SDM TO AVOID SMEARING/RUBBING THE POTTING COMPOUND
19. With the arrow on the top of the SDM pointing toward the front of the vehicle, install the module to the floor pan. See figure 4.
20. Install the SDM fasteners and tighten to 11 N.m (98 lb. in.).
21. Re-connect the electrical connector to the SDM and install the connector position assurance (CPA).
22. Apply double-sided tape to the carpet and secure carpet in place over the SDM.
23. Reinstall the seat in the vehicle and engage the front retaining hooks into the floor pan. See figure 3.
24. Tilt the seat forward and connect the power seat electrical connectors.
25. Tilt the seat rearward and install the two bolts that retain the rear of the seat to the floor pan. Tighten to 32 N.m (24 lb.ft.).
26. Check for proper operation of the seat.
27. Connect the yellow 2-way connector and CPA to the passenger inflator module pigtail through the trap door in the instrument panel compartment. See figure 2.
