P053
Code PO53:
Distributor Circuit:
DESCRIPTION
Code P053 is set if the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not receive distributor reference pulses from the Ignition Control Module (ICM) for more than 0.4 second. Since the Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system requires ICM pulses in order to activate the injectors, most occurrences of Code P053 will be accompanied by a stall.
TEST CONDITIONS
1. Code P019 not set.
2. Engine speed greater than 568 RPM.
FAILURE CONDITIONS
No distributor reference pulses have been received by the PCM for 0.4 second.
ACTION TAKEN
Code set. No service message.
NOTES ON FAULT TREE
1. Use essential tool J35616 to make jumpers. You will need 2 patch cords and 2 each of the J36516-28 and J35616-29 flexible connectors.
NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS
Do not attempt to diagnose Code P053 unless the customer symptom is stumble, stall, miss or other driveability condition that could be caused by loss of spark, ignition, or fuel.
Code P053 can be caused by:
1. Loss of battery power to "B+" terminal of the distributor.
2. A pickup coil that has an intermittent short, open or poor connection at the module.
3. Check PCM connector for improperly seated terminals and mating to the PCM connector.
