Final Drive Assembly & Parking Gear

FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY & PARKING GEAR 4T80-E TRANSAXLE







Refer to the images when servicing the final drive gear and parking gear assemblies.

1. Remove case extension and scavenger pipe as outlined.
2. Remove four differential housing bolts using torque wrench. Transaxle must be in Park with differential locked in place. If differential can rotate, turn the manual shaft counterclockwise to Park position. Actuator rod will stick out of case.
3. Remove differential housing.
4. Remove snap ring, then left side differential gear.
5. Remove thrust washer, then final drive carrier.
6. Remove sun gear.
7. Remove snap ring, then final drive internal gear.
8. Remove snap ring, then parking gear with thrust bearing.

DISASSEMBLE
1. Using a pin punch, drive out shaft retaining pin.
2. Remove differential pinion shaft.
3. Remove pinion gears and pinion thrust washers.
4. Remove snap ring, then right side gear.
5. Remove right differential thrust washer, then output shaft snap ring. Inspect snap ring for damage.
6. Remove left side gear and differential thrust washer.
7. Remove sun gear/carrier thrust bearing. Using a screwdriver, pry out seal on sun gear and inspect bearing. If bearing needs replacement, proceed as follows:
a. Remove roll pin and retainer.
b. Slide two of the planet pinions aside carefully so needle bearings do not fall out of carrier.
c. Remove bearing.
d. Reverse procedure for bearing instal lation.

INSPECTION
1. Check thrust bearings and washers for wear or damage.
2. Check clearance from planet pinion to carrier using a feeler gauge. Clearance should be 0.2-0.3 mm; if gears are out of specifications, replace carrier.
3. Check differential gears for wear or damage.
4. Check pinion shaft for scoring or damage.

ASSEMBLE
1. Install thrust washer, left side gear and output shaft snap ring.
2. Install right differential thrust washer, then right side gear and snap ring.
3. Install pinion thrust washers and pinion gear.
4. Install differential pinion shaft, then shaft retaining pin.
5. Install thrust washer and bearing.

INSTALLATION
1. Install parking gear with thrust bearing.
2. Install snap ring, then final drive internal gear.
3. Install sun gear with bushing and seal side facing differential.
4. Install final drive carrier, turning unit until it meshes with sun gear and internal gear teeth.
5. Install left thrust washer, then left differential side gear.
6. Install snap ring. Place transaxle in Park using manual shaft to lock final drive unit. Actuator rod will move up.
7. Install differential housing and bolts. Torque bolts in star pattern to 52-56 ft. lbs.
8. Install case extension and scavenger pipe as outlined.
